Metal solidification
Work by Mark Asta’s group at Northwestern and Jeff Hoyt at Sandia. They developed a simulation strategy for solidifying metals and metal alloys where the temperature of the system is carefully thermostatted so that the velocity of the interface can be accurately measured.
The snapshot is a liquid/solid interface in NiAl; the animation shows the motion of a solidification front in Ni.
