Precompiled packages

In addition to the LAMMPS source code tarballs, we also produce a selection of binary packages or installers so that LAMMPS can be installed and run, without having to compile it yourself. These are not always suitable, especially for HPC clusters. In that case we recommend compiling and installing software – including LAMMPS – using using the Spack HPC package manager.

The packages are usually created manually in preparation for a LAMMPS (or LAMMPS-GUI) release and are either attached as downloadable assets to the release notes. But they are also copied and collected in the packages tree of the LAMMPS download server. Sometimes, custom packages are uploaded to the testing folder.

Automatically compiled packages, taken from the develop branch of LAMMPS are uploaded to the nightly compilation folder.

LAMMPS + LAMMPS-GUI binaries for Linux x86_64

These are compressed tar archives with LAMMPS, LAMMPS-GUI, some supporting tools with some supporting shared libraries compiled currently in an AlmaLinux 9 container. The executables are launched through a wrapper shell script which sets up the bundled shared libraries to be loaded before the shared libraries in your system. For other shared libraries (e.g. glibc, gcc, etc.) full backward compatibility is assumed (and usually available).

Compatibility: RHEL 9 or later and Ubuntu 22.04LTS or later and compatible

Statically linked LAMMPS binaries for Linux x86_64

These are compressed tar archives with a LAMMPS that has been compiled with and statically linked to all its libraries. Since the GNU libc, which is common on many Linux distributions, does not support such a fully static linkage, an alternative C library called musl libc is used with a cross compiler tool-chain approach.

These executables should run on pretty much any Linux system with an x86_64 CPU, be it very old or very new. If you come across an incompatible system, please let us know.

Compatibility: any 64-bit Linux system with an x86_64 CPU

LAMMPS + LAMMPS-GUI Flatpak packages for Linux x86_64

These are Flatpak application bundles that can be installed locally (i.e. not via Flathub). Flatpak is a framework for distributing desktop applications across various Linux distributions. Flatpak applications run in a sandbox with its own runtime libraries and thus are independent from the host software environment. Flatpak is primarily designed for graphical applications and any application installed as flatpak will integrate itself into modern desktop environments.

Compatibility: any 64-bit Linux x86_64 system supported by the flatpak runtime.

LAMMPS + LAMMPS-GUI application disk images for macOS

These are macOS application disk images (.dmg) that have been compiled natively on macOS 12 Monterey and with full native support for Intel and Apple CPUs. They contain the LAMMPS-GUI graphical application as well as the LAMMPS console application. Please check the bundled README file on how to make the console application available.

Compatibility: macOS 12 Monterey or later with Intel or Apple CPUs

Installers with LAMMPS, LAMMPS-GUI and plugins for Windows

These packages are executables containing a Nullsoft scriptable installer for Windows 10 and later. The packages are available for 64-bit Windows systems, with and without support for MS-MPI, with or without the LAMMPS GUI, and with or without support for the PYTHON package, i.e. the option to call Python from LAMMMPS, (NOTE: the Python module, i.e. the option to import LAMMPS into Python scripts is always included since the included LAMMPS version is linked to a LAMMPS DLL file and the Python module is included as well). These packages also contain the LAMMPS manual in PDF format for offline reading, many example inputs, bundled potential files, benchmark inputs, and some tools.

Compatibility: 64-bit Windows 10 or later with an x86_64 CPU (older Windows versions may work but are not tested).
