The Structure, Shape, and Sizes of Swift Heavy Ion Tracks in Polyethylene

The results of simulations of amorphous polyethylene irradiations with swift heavy ions are presented. We combined the Monte Carlo TREKIS code and the LAMMPS molecular dynamics package with the AIREBO-M reactive force field to describe the damage along the entire uranium ion trajectories in polyethylene at the atomic level. As a general result, the mismatch between the positions of the maximum energy release and maximum damage on the ion trajectory was found.
