Observed periodic formations initiated on the interface between copper particles wrapped by silver can be explained by the 2D interfacial spinodal decomposition of two elements with limited solid solubility, copper and silver. Composition dependence of the configurational free energy of the unstable solid solutions was calculated using verified empirical pairwise potentials. Resulting periodicity is interpreted using classical theory of spinodal decomposition.
