As a novel thermosetting polymer, polybenzoxazine (PBZ) was distinguished by the excellent mechanical, thermal and versatile functional properties due to the existence of oxazine ring and ring- opening Mannich bridge structure in the molecular structure. Over recent decades, much substantial progress has been achieved by many researchers by exploring its versatility and improving its comprehensive performance through various strategies, aiming to meet the requirements from various engineering. This review focused on summarizing the latest research progress of PBZ, and introduces its synthesis, preparation, molecular simulation method and multifunctional applications. In addition, some neck-bottles issues and proposed effective methods to tackle these issues in the study of synthesis mechanism, molecular simulation and preparation and application of PBZ were especially emphasized. Finally, the future development prospects in the research and development of PBZ were discussed. This review is expected to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in molecular design, synthesis, preparation, processing, and composite modification of thermosetting polymer PBZ, thereby providing valuable references for promoting the development and application of PBZ.
